A Camarillo woman has been booked into the Ventura County Jail on felony DUI charges after a Wednesday car accident took the life of her 7 year-old son.
Police say that night, 33 year-old Latoya Najar was driving northbound on the Pacific Coast Highway. At some point during the drive her car veered off the road and crashed into a wall, a tree and eventually overturned.
Another adult and the defendant’s three children were inside the vehicle at the time the accident took place. Officers believe the youngest son was not wearing a seat belt at the time the crash occurred.
Her other adult passenger sustained multiple fractures and a 12 year-old boy was treated for a broken arm.
Officers say the driver seemed to be intoxicated when they arrived on the scene. Police say she was taken to a nearby hospital for chemical testing before they booked her at the jail.
She remains in custody on $50,000 bail bonds, although the judge could raise that amount when she appears in court. It’s not uncommon for felony DUI bail bonds when an accident, injury or death occurred to be set in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The defendant is set to appear in court later today.
