Members of the Ventura Police Department confirmed they arrested one suspect after a brawl broke out on East Santa Clara Street. It is unclear how many individuals were involved. The fight initially involved a few people but quickly grew to include others. It was at that time that the incident spilled onto South Palm Street.
A concerned community member alerted Ventura Police officials that a street brawl was taking place and requested squad cars be dispatched to its location. A 23 year-old stabbing victim was found in a parking lot close to where the incident had taken place. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries at the scene of the crime. Medical professionals believe he will make a full recovery. Suspect Carl Ponzio was identified by witnesses as being the primary assailant. Ponzio was interviewed for a short period of time and was then taken into custody.
He was reportedly transported to the Ventura County Jail where he was booked on a number of felony charges. Bail information was not immediately available but jail records indicate he was released after a friend or family member hired an expert Ventura bondsman. The cost to arrange his bond would have been 10% of the total bail amount. Payment plans are often available to those who are unable to pay up front in full. The defendant is due to appear back in court later this month.
