The death of an inmate who had been awaiting trial in the Ventura County Jail will be investigated by the Sheriff Department. Approximately one week ago, deputies noticed a 53-year old female detainee was not breathing. The discovery took place during a routine, nightly cell check.
According to a recent report by the Ventura County Star, the deputies administered CPR and a call was placed to emergency responders. The call indicated their belief the woman had suffered a seizure. Lifesaving measures were employed by responders when they arrived to the scene. Their efforts were not successful. Inmate Eydie Stepelton was pronounced dead a short time later. It is not believed Stepelton’s death was a result of any sort of foul play and appears to be from natural causes.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Ventura County Sheriff Major Crimes Unit. A department spokesperson said this type of investigation is standard procedure when someone dies while in custody. An autopsy has been scheduled and it believed the exact cause of death will become more clear upon receipt of toxicology, electrolyte, and histology testing results.
Stepelton had been arrested in late July after she failed to appear in court to resolve a domestic violence case.
