Representatives from the Camarillo PD are warning residents about the area’s latest phone scammer.
The con artist, they said, is calling around claiming to be representative from the US Treasury Department; they then proceed to tell whomever picks up that they owe a substantial amount of back taxes and if they don’t pay up, police will come to arrest them.
Approximately six dozen people have already called the Camarillo Police Department to make sure the authorities know what’s going on.
The person behind the phone calls is said to be male who has a foreign accent. Many of the phone calls have been originated from an 818 area code, they said, although several other area codes throughout LA and Texas have been reported.
CPD officials say that anyone who receives this type of call should be immediately suspicious. If anyone has concerns about a potential unpaid tax debt, police say they should call the IRS to verify and to not give credit or debit card information out to anyone over the phone.
