A representative from the Ventura County Jail has confirmed they are detaining a suspect who has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
The incident took place on Sunday morning. It was at that time that 61 year-old Ventura vagrant Arthur Finnegan attacked another vagrant, 31 year-old Daniel Ingraham.
Authorities reportedly said they were tipped off about the attack by a citizen. That unnamed person hailed a Ventura Police Department squad car and motorcycle officer. They had been called to the area several moments prior to deal with a fistfight that was taking place on the 500 block of East Thompson Street.
Officers said they saw the suspect attempting to flee the scene on a bicycle. He was chased for a short period of time before being captured. Police said he was seen tossing a number of items from his pockets at the time he was being pursued.
Ventura County Jail officials said the incident reportedly started out as a verbal argument. At some point it escalated into physical violence. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries. He was also stabbed in the chest. Medical professionals said he refused to be treated.
Suspect Finnegan was arrested and booked on charges of resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and assault with a deadly weapon. An investigation is still underway.
Bail information for the defendant was not immediately available but it is expected to have been set in excess of $50,000. The suspect will appear for his arraignment later this week.
Anyone who believes they have additional information regarding this attack are asked to call local authorities. Ventura County Jail officials do not believe the defendant will have the means or ability to hire an expert bondsman.
