When someone is arrested they will be handcuffed, they will be informed they have the right to remain silent and that they have the right to consult with an attorney. If they cannot afford an attorney one will be provided for them.
From there, they will be transported to one of the Ventura County jails. Once they arrive the defendant will have their finger prints and mug shots taken, their information will be entered into the computer system and they will undergo a national warrant screen and background check. They will be informed of the charges being filed against them and their bail amount will be set according to the county bail schedule. The bail schedule is a document that is set annually by a panel of Superior Court judges and it lists different bail amounts for different crimes. More serious crimes correspond with higher bail amounts whereas less serious crimes correspond with lower bail amounts.
The booking process can take anywhere from four to six hours, depending on how busy the jail is. It is important to note the defendant will not be permitted to post bail until the booking process is complete.
